INCREASED SERUM TGF-?1 IN CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA EXACERBATION

Background : Asthma is the most common chronic lower respiratory tract disease in children worldwide. Respiratory tract inflammation is important in the pathogenesis of asthma exacerbation. Serum transforming growth factor-?1 (TGF-?1) is a noninvasive inflammatory marker that is not affected by errors found in sputum examination or bronchoalveolar lavage. There are controversies about the level of serum TGF-?1 in asthma exacerbation. The aim of this study is to prove increased level of serum TGF-?1 in asthmatic children with exacerbation.
Material : This cross-sectional study was performed in asthmatic children aged above 28 days to 12 years old in Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar on July 2017 to January 2018. Data were collected through consecutive sampling. Chi-square and logistic regression were used to evaluate association of serum TGF-?1 with asthma exacerbation.
Results : There were 40 children with asthma exacerbations and 40 children without asthma exacerbations enrolled in this study. Bivariate analysis found increased serum TGF-?1 was a risk factor of asthma exacerbation (PR 2.15, 95% confidence interval 1.55 to 2.97, p=0.005). Logistic regression also showed that increased serum TGF-?1 was a risk factor of asthma exacerbation (OR 11.69, 95% confidence interval 1.38 to 98.93, p=0.024).
Conclusions : This study found the association of increased serum TGF-?1 with exacerbation in asthmatic children.
