Background As a nature of the childhood, put things in their mouth while playing or laughing could endanger them as well they could be aspirated into the airway. Foreign body (FB) aspiration in the airway is a life-threatening situation that need careful and prompt management. Rigid bronchoscopy is still the main tool to retrieve FB, but few centers also use the flexible bronchoscopy as safe as the rigid. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the safety of flexible bronchoscopy in FB retrieval. Method It was cross sectional study from medical record’s cases of airway FB retrieval using pediatric flexible bronchoscopy during year 2012 to early 2018. We used Olympus®bronchovideoscopes type BF XP160F, XP190 and P160. Results During 2012 to early 2018 there were 16 cases of suspected FBA. Three cases were not confirmed of FB and 2 were referred to other hospital. The age was vary from 10 days old to 11 years old. The symptoms were cough more than 2 weeks in 4/11 cases, whistling sound in 2/11 cases, acute stridor in 2/11 cases, dyspnea in 2/11 cases, 1/11 unilateral wheeze and 1/11 cases with choking history. The FB found were peanuts, plastic whistles, pinhead needle, sunflower seed, coil spring, tooth, and button battery. Only 1 case used rigid bronchoscopy. There was no complication in all procedures. Conclusions FBA is still the main problems in children and can lead to serious problem. Regarding to our experiences, flexible bronchoscopy is as safe as the rigid bronchoscope.
