STOOL ANALYSIS PROFILE OF PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH DIARRHEA TREATED IN CIPTO MANGUNKUSUMO HOSPITAL

Background: Diarrhea remains a major health problem in developing countries especially in Indonesia due to its high morbidity and mortality rate. The severity of diarrhea is associated with the age of the patient, nutritional status and the underlying cause of diarrhea. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and laboratory findings of pediatric patients with diarrhea based on their stool analysis profile that was treated in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital from 2012 until 2016. Methods: This research was a retrospective study using data from the stool analysis of pediatric patients aged 0 to 18 years old with diarrhea collected from Gastrohepatology Division, Department of Child Health, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital from 2012 until 2016. Supporting data was also taken from the medical record. All patients underwent stool analysis in the Laboratory of Gastrohepatology Division, Department of Child Health, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. Subjects with incomplete medical record were eliminated. Results: The average age of subjects is 45 months. Most of the patients (55.6%) were aged below 24 months and more than half of the patients (58.8%) were male. 67% of the patients presented with watery stool diarrhea. The interpretation of stool analysis profile showed that most of the patients suffered from diarrhea that is caused by bacterial infection (48%). Conclusions: The study concludes that children less than 24 months has a significant prevalence in diarrhea. Male pediatric patients also showed a higher prevalence in our results. Watery stool were found more frequent in characteristic of the stool analyzed in the study. Bacteria were the most frequent etiology of diarrhea based on our stool analysis profile study.
