Background : Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) types that are commonly found in children are Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura, which the highest prevalence among 8-12 years old. Monotherapy treatment of Trichuris trichiura had low cure rate. Pyrantel pamoate analog with oxantel pamaoate, can be combine with albendazole in Trichuris trichiura infection. There is no study report about pyrantel pamoat and albendazole in Trichuris trichiura infection.
Material : This was a randomized controlled trial study, conducted on Bangli regions, Bali. We randomly assigned children, 8 to 12 years old, to receive one of two teratments: albendazole 400 mg plus pyrantel pamoate at single dose of 10 mg per body weight; or albendazole at singlea dose of 400 mg. We were determined the efficacy of pyrantel pamoate-albendazole compare to albendazole for Trichuris trichiura infection. Efficacy was determined by cure rate and egg reduction rate. Data were analyzed with spss 24.00 using chi-square test.
Results : There were 392 children 8 to 12 years old on 5 public elementary school in Bangli, Bali,, of whom 60 were infected with Trichuris trichiura infection. The cure rate of Trichuris trichiura infection was lower with albendazole-pyrantel pamoate than albendazole (40% vs 60%, p 0.19). The egg reduction rate of Trichuris trichiura infection was lower with albendazole-pyrantel pamoate than albendazole (44.7% vs 55.3%, p 0.28).
Conclusions : This study obtained Albendazol-pyrantel pamoate can not improve cure rate and egg reduction rate in 8-12 years old children with Trichuris trihiura infection.
