NEONATAL OUTCOMES AFTER IN VITRO FERTILIZATION IN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF SINGAPORE
Stephanie Hii,Le Ye Lee National University Hospital
Background : In vitro fertilization (IVF) has been on the rise world-wide over the past few decades and is now becoming increasingly common in the management of sub fertility. Our aim was to evaluate the immediate neonatal outcomes after IVF in National University Hospital of Singapore. Material : A retrospective study of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions from 2013 – 2017 was audited using the admission data. Results : There were 2278 admissions to NICU, of which 163 (7.2%) were babies born after IVF. Of these, majority were pre-terms (75%), with a mean gestational age of 33.2 (SD 3.3) weeks. 11 were extreme pre-terms of less than 28 weeks. Their mean birth weight was 1877 (SD 596) g. 28% were small for gestational age (SGA). 27% of all premature babies were SGA. Majority of the pre-terms were due to multiple births. The most common reasons for admission were prematurity with respiratory distress syndrome requiring ventilation (n=52/163), and hypoglycaemia (n=46/163). 23% had congenital anomalies, of which 76% were major birth defects – 61% of these required surgical correction. Both prematurity and congenital malformations contributed to the 4 deaths in this group. The mean length of stay was 30 days. In twins, the twin with congenital malformation stayed 18 days longer than the other normal twin. Conclusions : Significant neonatal morbidities after IVF in our study included prematurity and its attendant complications of low birth weight, growth retardation and respiratory distress syndrome, and congenital anomalies were identified in one fifth of those admitted
