Background : There are various examinations to assess renal function, which is crucial to identify patients with renal disease. Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is the best test to measure level of renal function and determine the stage of renal disease. The gold standard to estimate GFR can be obtained using renography which is a method to assess renal function using radioisotop Tc99m mixed with Diethylene Triamine Penta Acetic Acid (DTPA). This study aims to compare the GFR calculation results using Schwartz formula with renography.
Material : This is a descriptive study of 34 renography patients in Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Semarang. The percentage of GFR were obtained from manual calculation using Schwartz formula and scanning of renal function using gamma camera by Tc99m DTPA radiation resource.
Results : An independent-samples t-test was conducted to compare GFR total by calculation with Schwartz formula and by examination with renography. There was not a significant difference in the scores for calculation with Schwartz formula, mean GFR was 51.29 ml/minute/m2 (SD 37.75) and examination with renography, mean GFR was 51.63 ml/minute/m2 (SD 36.39), conditions; t (66)=0.038, p = 0.970. The result revealed that there is no significant difference of GFR calculation between Schwartz formula with renography. Nine patients had different GFR value from the measuring by Schwartz formula and examination with renography, it might be caused by creatinin and renography examination of six patients were taken in the different time, and three patients could not be identified the causes correctly.
Conclusions : Measurement of GFR with Schwartz formula can be an alternative way to early assess of renal function that does not have medical nuclear facility.
