OVERVIEW OF SLEEP DISTURBANCE IN CHILD WITH EPILEPSY

Background : Epilepsy is a neurologic disorder that often has neurobehavioral comorbids associated with psychiatric, cognitive and social problems. Sleep disorders are common in epilepsy patients. Age of epilepsy onset and duration of anti-epilepsy drugs are factors that affects sleep. This study aims to provides an overview of sleep disorders in children with epilepsy.
Material : This was an observational study with cross sectional design in children ages 1 to 18 years, who have been diagnosed with epilepsy for at least 6 months. Patients with cerebral palsy were excluded from the study. Duration of treatment were devided into less than 12 months, and more than 12 months. The subjects were chosen on a total sampling method during February - April 2018 at Child Neurology Clinic at Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Hospital. Sleep disturbances were assessed by sleep disturbance scale for child (SDSC) questionnaires.
Results : Among the 32 subjects which fulfill the inclusion criteria,18 boys and the mean age was 7 years. Twenty five subjects had sleep disturbances. Sixteen subjects with duration of treatment more than 12 months had experience sleep disturbance.
Conclusions : From this study, sleep disturbance in children with epilepsy is quite high, especially in children with duration of anti epileptic drug treatment more than 12 months. Sleep disturbance is one comorbid that is often found in children with epilepsy
