THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LONG OF ANTI-EPILEPTIC TREATMENT WITH QUALITY OF LIFE IN CHILDREN

Background : Epilepsy is a chronic disease that can influence the quality of life in children. This study aimed to know the relationship between long of anti-epileptic treatment with quality of life in children.
Material : A prospective study was implemented in Child Neurology Polyclinic Prof. R.D. Kandou Hospital Manado between 1 April until 30 April 2018. Inclusion criteria was all children aged 3 months – 18 years and has consumed valproat acid for more than 3 months.Children with palcy cerebral was excluded. Long of anti-epileptic treatment was divided into 2 groups, consist of > 3 months until 12 months and > 12 months. The data of quality of life was collected through interview with the parent or caregiver based on QOLCE-55 instrument. Quality of life according to QOLCE-55 was divided into 4 aspects: cognitive, emotional, physic and social function. The relationship between long of anti-epileptic treatment and quality of life was assessed with coefisient correlation Phi.
Results : There were 30 children included in the study, 22 were boys with median age of sample was 8 year. Four children had anti-epileptic treatment for >3 months until 12 months, among of them, three children had impairment of quality of life. Twenty six children had antiepileptic treatment for > 12 months, with 22 children had impairment of quality of life. From 25 children who had quality of life impairment, the most affected aspect was cognitive function (15 children). There’s no relationship between long of anti-epileptic treatment with quality of life (p = 0,553).
Conclusions : Clinically, epilepsy affects quality of life of the children especially the cognitive aspect. But, long of anti-epileptic treatment doesn’t have any relationship with quality of life.
