THE EFFECT OF ANTIEPILEPTIC DRUG ON HEIGHT IN PEDIATRIC EPILEPSY PATIENTS

Background : Epilepsy is one of the most common causes of morbidities in the pediatric neurology that raises various clinical problems, growth development disorders and decreases the quality of child. The treatment of epilepsy with antiepileptic drug is a long-term treatment has a variety of side effects, such as height. Objective is to know the effect of antiepileptic drug on heigth in pediatric epilepsy patient. Material : This study was conducted using analitic cross sectional method. Subjects were all epilepsy patient age 1-18 years and received antiepileptic drug > 12 months, divided into 2 groups (received antiepileptic drug ? 24 months and < 24 months) in pediatric outpatient Prof. Dr. R. D Kandou Hospital from March 1st - April 30th , 2018. Data were analyzed using Chi Square. Results : There were 55 children, 41 males (74.5%) and 14 females (25.5%). Mean age were 8.7 years, mean height were 116 cm, and mean weight were 27.81 kg. Average duration of using antiepileptic drug were 23.98 months. There were 9 (25%) of 27 children with less than normal height in the > 24 months group. There is a significant correlation between the duration of using antiepileptic drug with height (p=0.017). Conclusions : Long-term use of antiepileptic drug is at risk for height
