THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SEASONAL VARIATION AND VARIANT GUILLAIN BARRE SYNDROME IN CHILDREN AT Dr SOETOMO HOSPITAL SURABAYA

Background : Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated disorder of nervous system of acute or subacute onset characterized commonly by generalized progressive weakness of arms and legs, limb paraesthesias and relative or complete areflexia. A seasonal variation in GBS incidence has been reported in some studies according to the season respectively. The aim of this study is to determine the possible association between seasonal variation and variant GBS in Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya-Indonesia.
Material : A retrospective study was done in children below 18 years old at Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from 1 April 2016 to 31 April 2018. Demographics data were obtained from medical record. The patients were divided into two seasonal groups: S1 (summer, April to October) and S2 (rainy, November to March). Statistical analysis using Mann Whitney test with significant p<0.05.
Results : There were 51 children who was diagnosed as GBS included in this study. The mean age was 7.9 (SD 3.7) years, which 52.9% were male. The highest number of GBS cases (78.4%) were found in rainy season (November to March) which 32 (62.7%) were AIDP (Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy) variant. Twenty nine (56.9%) came with motor impairment of paraparetic on admission and 29 (56.9%) were involving respiratory tract. There were no significant difference between seasonal variation in male vs female (p=0.578, CI 95%) and variant GBS with seasonal variation (p=0.791, CI 95%).
Conclusions : GBS in children are most occur in rainy season (November to March), which no significant difference between seasonal variation and variant GBS.
