Background : Erasmus GBS Outcome Scale (EGOS) is prognosis score scale with clinical factors related to the outcome of patients with Gullain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). Prediction of poor outcome of patients with GBS should be made as early as possible to determine the following management in the hospital and home care. This study aims to analyze the outcome of children patients with GBS by using EGOS.
Material : A cross-sectional study of 1-18 year-old children with GBS was conducted to collect data from medical records of the patients who were admitted in Dr Soetomo hospital from January 2016 until March 2018. Demography, clinical characteristics, EGOS, and outcome of GBS patients were noted. EGOS defined good (<3), poor (3-6), very poor (>6). Statistical analysis of Chi-Square tests were used with P<0.05 being significant.
Results : A total of 38 children was included in the study, dominated by male (22/38) children with mean age 7.2 (SD 3.57) years. Mean duration of illness was 17.5 (SD 11.91, range 2-48) days. The most common infection that preceded was upper respiratory infection which reached 23/38 cases. The pattern of weakness by tetraparese was in 21/38 children and paraparese was in 17/38 children. From the last follow up, 30/38 children recovered, 7/38 children with sequele, and 1/38 children died. There was a significant relation between high EGOS score and poor outcome (P<0.05).
Conclusions : The high score of EGOS predicts poor outcome in GBS children.
