Background : Vitamin D deficiency is emerging as a new risk factor for several major diseases including metabolic syndrome. It's associated with the action of vitamin D through its various cell receptors. Increasing metabolic syndrome prevalence in obese children, made it serious public health challenges that causes premature morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome in obese children.
Material : This research was a cross sectional study conducted from June to August 2017. The data were obtained from Elementary School, Junior High School, and Senior High School students in Makassar ranging from 6 to 18 years old. The samples were divided into two groups, i.e. 43 children with metabolic syndrome and 40 children without metabolic syndrome. They were determined based on Indonesian Pediatric Association criteria. Each groups was checked for 25 (OH) D level. Serum level of 25 (OH)D were measured using Enzyme-Linked Immunoabsorbent Assay (Bioassay Technology China). Deficiency vitamin D defined as serum 25(OH) D < 20 ng/mL. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 21.
Results : Mean vitamin D level was 14,55 ng/mL in obese children with metabolic syndrome and 22,78 ng/mL in obese children without metabolic syndrome. It was observed in our study that the frequency of metabolic syndrome was 70,6% in obese children with vitamin D deficiency, compare to obese children with normal vitamin D status (21,9%) p < 0,001 OR= 8,571 (CI 95% 3,054 – 24,060).
Conclusions : Obese children with vitamin D deficiency have a risk of 8,57 times to experience metabolic syndrome than obese children with normal vitamin D status.
