Background : Stunting were common problems among elementary school children. Previous studies reported that stunting was found to be associated with lower marks of academic achievements. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between incidence of stunting among elementary school children and their academic achievement.
Material : This analytical observational study employed cross sectional design. This study was conducted in an elementary school located in Cirebon, West Java, on April 2018, and comprised all students of the school except the first graders. Name, gender, age, height, height for age (z-score) and their academic achievement of final semester on mathematics, Indonesian language, natural science and social science were recorded. Chi-Square statistical test was used to analyze the data.
Results : Of the 203 participants, 94 (46,30%) were boys and 109 (53,70%) were girls. Based on WHO's parameter of determining height using Height for Age (Z-score), it was found that 177 students (87,20%) were normal and 26 (12,80%) were stunting. The Chi-Square test did not show any significant correlation between stunting and student's final semester marks of mathematics (p=0,565), Indonesian language (p=0,481), natural science (p=0,258), stunting and social science (p=0,328).
Conclusions : There was no evidence of correlation between stunting and academic achievements among elementary school children in Cirebon, West Java. Further study is recommended with larger samples.
