PROFILE OF NUTRITIONAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL STATUS OF UNDER 5-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN IN TANJUNG KARANG DISTRICT, MATARAM, INDONESIA

Background : Growth and development aspects are considered to play an important role in nurturing children’s life. However, in 2016, malnutrition (WHZ<-2) and stunting (LAZ<-2) prevalence in West Nusa Tenggara province are still high accounted for 9.76% and 29.9% respectively, while data for developmental status is still scarce. We aimed to describe the profile of nutritional and developmental status in under 5-year-old children in Mataram, Indonesia. Material : This study was a community-based cross-sectional study held in Tanjung Karang, Mataram, Indonesia in January 2018. All under 5-year-old children coming to integrated health service post (Posyandu) were recruited as participants and underwent anthropologic measurement and developmental screening by using development pre-screening questionnaires (KPSP). Results : A total of 676 under 5-year-old children were enrolled in this study and 638 children completed the developmental screening. 19.2% (122/628) of participants were underweight and severely underweight; 6.5% (42/561) were wasted and severely wasted; and 28.9% (184/571) were stunted and severely stunted. For developmental screening, 12.2% (78/638) of participants were suspected to have doubtful results and 3.1% (20/638) were suspected to have developmental delay. Developmental delay was in the following items: 8.9% in gross motor domain, 8.9% in fine motor domain, 7.2% in speech and language domain, and 5.5% in personal-social domain. Conclusions : Prevalence of underweight and severely underweight, stunting and wasting are lower than province’s prevalence in 2016. Considerable proportion of children is suspected to have developmental delay and should be evaluated by further examinations. Moreover, it might be implied that developmental screening should be routinely performed in Posyandu along with growth examination.
