Background : The first 1000 days of life is subtantial and fundamental period in child’s life. Any disturbance (i.e. failure to thrive /FTT), will negatively impact growth and development. Nutrition demand increase concomitantly with feeding skill development on 6-24 months old. Good quality, proportional, sufficient complementary foods are needed in this period to prevent FTT. The aim of this study was to prove relationship of feeding-pattern (breastfeeding with solid food, combination of breastfeeding-formula milk (mixed feeding) with solid food, formula milk with solid food) and formula milk consumption (percentage of daily formula milk calorie compared to Recommended Daily Allowance/RDA) with risk of failure to thrive in 6-24 month old children in Kenjeran, Surabaya, Indonesia. Material : A community based cross-sectional study was conducted in 6-24 month old children in Kenjeran, Surabaya, Indonesia from March 13 to April 14, 2018. There were 39 children (20 risk of FTT, 19 no risk of FTT) included in the study whom were chosen consecutively in Posyandu. A logistic regression analysis was carried out to identify relationship of feeding-pattern and formula milk consumption with risk of FTT. Results : There were significant relationships of feeding-pattern (breastfeeding with solid food OR=4.4;95%CI=1.041-18.599;p=0.044) and formula milk consumption (OR=0.969;95%CI=0.945-0.994; p=0.014) with risk of FTT. There were significant relationships of exclusive breastfeeding for six months history (OR=15;95%CI=1.397-161.045;p=0.025) and sex (female OR=5.2;95%CI=1.317-20.539;p=0.019) with risk of FTT. There were no significant relationships of calori/RDA percentage (OR=0.998;95%CI 0.968-1.028;p=0.870), protein/RDA percentage (OR=1.002;95%CI 0.996-1.008;p=0.495) and protein:calorie ratio (OR=1.032;95%CI 0.958-1.113;p=0.409) in solid foods with risk of FTT. Conclusions : Feeding-pattern (breastfeeding with solid food) and formula milk consumption have significant relationships with risk of FTT in 6-24 month old children in Kenjeran Surabaya, Indonesia. Education on ideal quality and quantity of complementary foods, feeding rules and supplementation of high calorie complementary foods are necessary.
