ALBUMIN LEVEL ON ADMISSION CAN PREDICT THE MORTALITY AND LENGTH OF STAY OF CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN IN PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Background : Outcome prediction is important for providing information on patient outcomes for clinicians and family of critically ill patients. The level of albumin on admission checked to children who admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and can predict the severity of the disease. Aim of this study was to know the correlation between albumin level on admission with mortality and length of stay of critically ill children in PICU
Material : A restrospective study from the medical records of critically ill children in PICU RSUP Prof Kandou Hospital from January until December 2017. All of critically ill children which checked the albumin level until 48 hours after admission were taken to be a sample. Exclusion criteria was the patient with nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease. The correlation between albumin and mortality was tested with logistic regression. The correlation between albumin and length of stay was tested with Spearman’s rho.
Results : There were 544 children who admitted to the PICU, among of them, there were 101 children who fulfill the inclusion criteria, with the median of age 2 years. There were 58 boys (58%). Albumin level have a significant association with mortality (p = 0,001). The higher albumin level the less likely the patient will die. Albumin level doesn’t have significant association with length of stay of critically ill children (p = 0,254).
Conclusions : The albumin level can predict the mortality but can’t predict the length of stay of the critically ill children in PICU.
