Background : Allergic rhinitis is a global health problem that has increasing prevalence. Many kinds of therapy have been used, including antihistamine, probiotic and immunotherapy. Immunotherapy becomes a therapy that allows the patient to restore normal immunity against the allergen specifically, while probiotics may modify the natural course of the allergic disease. This study was done to evaluate the probiotic and immunotherapy treatment in improvement of allergic rhinitis clinical symptoms.
Material : A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) study was done involving 64 outpatients, aged 3-18 y.o., who diagnosed as persistent allergic rhinitis in Child Health Department Dr.Sardjito General Hospital since April 2016 until May 2017. Patients were randomly divided into three groups of therapy; standard (cetirizine) group, standard combined with probiotic group and standard combined with immunotherapy group. Clinical symptomps of allergic rhinitis; sneezing, rhinorrea, and itchy nose, were evaluated every week for 7 weeks and grouped into improving and not improving. Data significancy was analyzed by proportion test.
Results : 64 outpatients finished 7 weeks of therapy, 15 (23,4 %) outpatients in standard group, 26 (40,6 %) outpatients in standard combined with probiotic group and 23 (36,0 %) outpatients in standard combined with immunotherapy group. Improvement of sneezing and rhinorrhea in standard combined with immunotherapy group were significantly better than with standard group (Z=5,71; Z=7,57) and standard combined with probiotic group (Z=2,82; Z=6,90). As itchy nose was significantly better improvement only with standard group (Z=10,91), and not significant with standard combined with probiotic group. (Z=0,52). Standard combined with probiotic group was better improvement than standard group significantly in sneezing, rhinorrhea and itchy nose (Z=3,81; Z=2,86, Z=10,93).
Conclusions : The standard combined with immunotherapy group has better improvement significantly compared with standard group and standard combined with probiotic group in sneezing and rhinorrea of children with persistent allergic rhinitis.
