HIV-POSITIVE MOTHER’S ATTITUDE AND KNOWLEDGE TOWARDS THEIR JUDGEMENT OF FEEDING FOR THEIR INFANT IN TARAKAN HOSPITAL, JAKARTA

Background : Feeding on HIV exposed infant is a dilemmatic problem for everyone especially the mother. Breastmilk is proven to be the best nutrition for children’s growth and development. On the other hand, risk of HIV transmission from mother to child from breastfeeding is approximately 10-15%, even 50-70% happened in the first 6 months of breastfeeding (from a mother who have never received anti retroviral drugs). By giving the mother a proper information, all HIV-positive mothers will help them to decide which nutrition to be given to their infant, so hopefully the risk of transmission can be supressed.
Material : A descriptive study was done from January 2017 until April 2018. Data were collected face-to-face interviews using a valid questionnaire. The subjects are all HIV-positive mothers who has given birth in Tarakan Hospital and visiting Tarakan’s Department of Child Health for their infant’s medical check up.
Results : The subjects were 44 mothers ranging from 18-41 years old, most of them (84,6%) were housewives. Mothers with high educational level (minimum of passing senior high school) were 54,5%. About 72,7% mothers had antenatal care minimum 4 times, most of them were done at Puskesmas. About 88,6% mothers had good knowledge and choosing infant formula for their infant nutrition with various considerations. >From our data, the infant who were delivered by caesarian section around 31 infants and 86,4% had normal birth weight.
Conclusions : A proper education within antenatal care especially for HIV-positive mother will increase their knowledge and judgement for choosing the best nutrition to be given to their infant, despite their condition. A quality counseling by every medical staffs especially in primary health care, so hopefully it can help the parents to understand their condition and reduce the risk of virus transmission to their infants.
