Time for LC-PUFA Supplementation?
Conny Tanjung Indonesian Pediatric Society, Pantai Indah Kapuk Hospital
Omega-3 and omega-6 with their 3 main products namely arachidonic acid (ARA) from omega-6 group, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from omega-3 group have attracted great attention due to their big impact on human health. Systematic review and meta-analysis of various ARA and DHA supplementations had not given consistent results. Some speculation were proposed for these condition such as earlier exposure that is in utero period provides a greater beneficary, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 and the influence of the Fatty Acid Desaturase (FADS) gene cluster that regulate D5D and D6D enzyme proteins. Studies done in the last decade have shown that single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) of in FADS1 and FADS2 gene linked very closely with omega-6 and omega-3 concentration. There were also several studies observing the effect of FADS1 and FADS2 gene polymorphism towards allergy, intelligent quotient and several degenerative diseases, namely in diabetes melitus and coronary artery disease. We aimed to discuss about the time of exposure, and the influence of FADS genotypes on LC-PUFA composition, and their role in human health.
