Background : Early diagnosis of pediatric psychiatric problems such as autism, behavioral emotional problem, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may benefit children in receiving adequate stimulation and intervention. Although Indonesia Health Ministry had launched Early Stimulation, Detection and Intervention of Child Growth and Development (SDIDTK) containing screening tools for those problems, the prevalence are still scarce.
Material : This study was a community-based cross-sectional study held in Tanjung Karang, Mataram, Indonesia in January 2018. All 18 to 36 month-old children coming to Posyandu were recruited as participants and underwent interview with trained team using modified checklist for autism in toddler (M-CHAT) for autism screening, and above 36 month-old for ADHD and behavioral emotional problem screening using behavioral and emotional problem questionnaire (KMPE) and abbreviated conners rating scale.
Results : Total of 369 children age 18 months old and above were enrolled in this study. After adjusting for age criteria and excluding missing data, 17/190 children were suspected with autism (8.94%), 9/138 children were suspected to have behavioral problems (6.52%), and 6/138 children were suspected with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (4.34%).
Conclusions : Considerable number of children with high risk of autism, emotional behavioral problem, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder could be detected early by using SDIDTK kit. Thus, screening should be conducted regularly to ensure early detection and management for children with risk of mental health problems in order to achieve better prognosis.
