PROFILE OF SLEEP DISTURBANCE IN CHILDREN WITH OBESITY

Background : Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health issues nowadays. Its increasing incidence concerns potential risk of metabolic syndrome in later life. Recent studies suggested childhood obesity was more prevalent in children with sleep disturbance. However, there is no published study on this issue so far in Indonesia. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and profile of sleep disturbance in children with obesity in Yogyakarta city.
Material : We conducted a cross sectional study involving students in Yogyakarta city. The subjects were recruited by two-stage cluster sampling. Initially, we divided the city area into 4 equal quadrants, and then randomly chose one school in each quadrant. All obese 4th and 5th grade students were recruited for the study. We got written consent from children and their parents. Obesity was determined by calculating body mass index. To evaluate the presence/absence of sleep problem, we requested students and the parents to fill out sleep disturbances scale for children (SDSC) questionnaire.
Results : Of 209 children with obesity, 207 (99.0%) had sleep disturbance. Most of children (80.4%) had problem in initiating and maintaining sleep, followed by problems in sleep-awake transition (13.9%), excessive somnolence (2.9%), arousal (1%), and sleep breathing disorder and sleep hyperhidrosis (0.5%).
Conclusions : Sleep disturbance is surprisingly present in almost all children with obesity in Yogyakarta city. The most common type of sleep disturbance identified is disorders of initiating and maintaning sleep.
