RELATIONSHIP OF PARENTING STYLES ON DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN

Background : To investigate the relationship between parenting styles and development of children in playgroup and daycare at TPA MAKARA UI, Depok.
Material : A cross-sectional study was conducted in 37 children by consecutive random sampling. The data were collected from April to May 2018. Children development was assessed using The Denver II test and parenting styles were assessed using kuesioner pola asuh anak created by Irawati Ismail. Parenting styles was divided into democratic and non-democratic, whilst child development was classified into normal development and suspect of delayed development. Frequency distribution were provided and Fischer’s exact test were used to assess the difference of proportion between two groups.
Results : There were 37 subjects involved at TPA MAKARA UI, Depok, who divided playgroup and daycare. This study revealed that most of the children has normal development (86.5% vs 13.5%). Children with normal developmental had 93.8% democratic parenting styles, suspected delayed developmental children had 40% democratic parenting styles. Children with delayed had 60% non-democratic parenting styles. There were difference in proportion of democratic and non-democratic parenting styles and children’s developmental status (p=0.012).
Conclusions : This study showed that most children with normal development had democratic parenting style, whilst most of children with suspect of delayed development has non-democratic parenting style. Further prospective study with larger sample size especially in multicenter would be needed to assess relation of parenting styles and other related factors to development of Indonesian children.
