Background : A complex medical and psychosocial problem may influence the quality of life of children with epilepsy. The aim of this study is to determine the affecting factors for quality of life in children with epilepsy in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital-Palembang. Material : A cross-sectional study to determine factors affecting the quality of life in children with epilepsy was done in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital-Palembang, from November until December 2017. Factors studied consisted of clinical (etiology of epilepsy, frequency of seizure attack, type of epilepsy, duration of epilepsy, age of onset, and type of medications used) and demographic profile (age, sex, total of children in family, education, and total income). Children with severe neurological disability (such as those with GMFCS levels 4 and 5) were excluded. The shortened quality of life in childhood epilepsy questionnaire-parent form (QOLCE-55) was used to assess the quality of life. Results : A total of 40 children was included in this study, with mean age of 8.22 (SD 4.35) years old and QOLCE-55 score of 63.60 (SD 19.90). Factors significantly (p<0.05) correlated with quality of life in children with epilepsy were age of onset, duration of illness, and number of seizure within the last 6 months with r values of 0.331, -0.423, and -0.304 respectively. Children with idiopathic epilepsy have better quality of life compared to those with symptomatic epilepsy (mean QOLCE-55 scores 70.75 vs 46.92; p<0.001). There were no significant correlation between demographic profile, type of seizure, and medication used with quality of life in children with epilepsy. Conclusions : The age of onset, duration of illness, number of seizure within the last 6 months are significantly correlated with quality of life in children with epilepsy. Children with symptomatic epilepsy have lower quality of life.
