THE CORRELATION BETWEEN LENGTH OF HOSPITALIZATION AND DEPRESSION IN CHILDREN WITH CHRONIC DISEASE AT DR SOETOMO HOSPITAL SURABAYA

Background : Depression can occur in children with chronic disease who are hospitalized. Prolonged hospitalization consider to higher risk the prevalence of depression that can affect the outcome. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between length of hospitalization and depression in children with chronic disease.
Material : A cross-sectional was done in Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from March to May 2018. Children between 7 to 18 years with chronic disease such as hematology oncology, chronic kidney, and liver disease, hospitalized more than 7 days were screened for depression. Children with history of depressive or other mental disorders were excluded. Depression was evaluated using Children’s Depression Ratting Scale-Revised (CDRS-R) questionnaire. Statistical analysis using comparative and correlation test with P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results : A total of 50 children was involved and no child was excluded, 27(54%) were male and 23(46%) were female. The mean age was 11.8 ± 0.39 years, and the mean length of hospitalization was 16±1.6 days. The mean score of CDRS-R was 45.2±2.3. Mild depression or no symptoms found in 11(22%) of patients and depression was detected in various degree such as moderate depression in 17(34%) of patients, and severe depression in 22(44%) of patients (OR 5.14. CI 1.299-20.36; P= 0.025). There was a significant moderate correlation between length of hospitalization and score of CDRS-R (r=0.400, P= 0.004).
Conclusions : Children with chronic disease who are hospitalized more than 7 days have higher risk of depression.
