Background : Active television-viewing and television exposure were related to sleeping difficulties in children. Television behaviors and light exposure can be detrimental to sleep onset, duration and quality. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between duration of television-viewing and sleep disturbances in resident’s children.
Material : A cross-sectional study was performed among resident’s children aged 4-10 years old from January to April 2018. The residents were asked to fill the duration of television-viewing questionnaire and the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) consisting of 33-item parental questions. Duration of television-viewing was grouped into 3 categories namely <1 hour, 1-3 hours and >3 hours. The children were grouped having sleep disturbances if CSHQ scores >41 and no sleep disturbances if the scores ?41. Statistical analysis using correlation test with P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results : A total of 60 children were included, 34 (56.7%) were male and 26 (43.3%) were female. Duration of televion-viewing <1 hour was found in 15% children, 1-3 hours in 73.3% children and >3 hours in 11.7% children. Mean of CSHQ scores was 50.2 (SD 6.87). Sleeping disturbances was found in 48 (80%) children. The duration of television-viewing has a weak positive correlation with sleep disturbances (r=0.377;P=0.003).
Conclusions : Duration of television-viewing might be one of a risk factors for sleep disturbances in resident’s children.
