EVALUATION OF THE CHILDHOOD AUTISM RATING SCALE IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER USING RISPERIDONE

Background : Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a syndrome associated with persistent impairments in communication skills and social interactions. The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was used to identification of children with ASD. Recent evidence indicates that risperidone may be beneficial for various aspects of autism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the CARS score before and after using risperidone. Material : A cross sectional study was performed on children with ASD at Child Development Clinic of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya from January 2017 to May 2018. Children with ASD using risperidone therapy for 6 months (dose range 0.1-0.5 mg per day) were included. The data of CARS Score before and after therapy was obtained from medical records. Statistical analysis using pair-t-test with p< 0.05 was considered significant. Results : A total of 16 children were included, 15 (93.8%) were male and 1 (6.3%) was female. The mean age was 5.9 ± 0.45 years. The CARS score after risperidon therapy (33.7 ± 0.64) was significant lower than before risperidone theraphy (40.4 ± 1.1) [CI 95% 5.369 – 8.380, P < 0.05]. Conclusions : Children with ASD showed a better the CARS score after 6 months treatment using risperidone.
