COMMUNITY INTERVENTION EFFECT ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT LIVING IN ORPHANAGE

Background : Early child development is a essential thing because of it impacts on their future life, and it can be influenced by the environment. Children living in orphanages have different situation from family setting. There are some differences among orphanages in looking after the children that it gives different impacts on their development. The purpose of this research is to analyze relationship between community intervention and child development in orphanage. Material : This is a cross setional study comparing the development of children living in orphanage until 3 years old that's given a community intervention program in Yogyakarta to the development of those without intervention in Sidoarjo. Community intervention program is a visitation of community to orphanages to enable them to play and talk with chldren for two hours twice a day. The evaluation of child development is using Denver Development Screening Test II (Denver II) and Parent Evaluation of Development Status (PEDS). For statistical analysis chi square test is used. Results : There is a significant relatioship between community intervention and language development and also between length of stay in orphanage and personal social development with p 0.003 and 0.02 respectively by Denver II examination. There is a significant relationship between community intervention and development abnormality, and also between length of stay and development abnormality with PEDS score (p 0.45 and 0.003 respectively). Conclusions : Community intervention program is beneficial to increase language and social interaction development of children 0-3 years old living in orphanages.
