EFFECTIVENESS OF BRAIN GYM IN REDUCING ANXIETY IN PRESCHOOLERS AND SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN

Background : Anxiety in children with hospitalized will lead the uncomfortable conditions of both the child and the family, which can develop into a psychological crisis in children and will prolong the length of treatment in children. One of the interventions to reduce children's anxiety is brain gym. This study aims to determine impact of brain gym on decreasing anxiety of preschoolers and school age
Material : Data collection using ZSRAS (Zung Sel-Rating Anxiety Scale) modification instrument and T-AMS (Tailor Manifest Anxiety Scale) in school-aged children and observation sheet in preschoolers. The design used was Experimental pre-post test involving 32 children selected by purposive sampling. Brain gym was given twice a day for two days consecutively. Data analysis using test statistic test Wilcoxon Signed Ranks
Results : Brain gym are effective in reducing anxiety in school-aged children (p <0.01) and also in preschoolers (p = 0.006). Movement of brain exercises can activate neocortex and parasympathetic nerves that can ease psychic tension and physical tension
Conclusions : Brain gym is effective in reducing anxiety in children both in school age and preschool age. Therefore, this intervention can serve as one of the interventions to improve social skills in reducing children's anxiety
