Growth and development disturbance in children under five years in Indonesia is still a national health problem. According to the Health Affairs Ministry of Indonesia, around 37 percent, or approximately 9 million children, under five years in Indonesia have stunted growth and based on literature, about 20 percent of children below 5 years old in Indonesia have at least one developmental delay.
Mother infant bonding during the first two years of life is important to infant growth and development, and the most important stage for brain development is the beginning of life, starting in the womb and then the first year of life. All caregivers involved in the childbirth process can support the bonding process by providing education and support during the postpartum period that will encourage participation in skin-to-skin contact, early breastfeeding, eye contact, and newborn massage. Effective mother infant bonding requires the infant and mother be close to each other, therefore the infants can signal their needs and mothers can respond. Bonding is the emotional tie from parent to child that is manifested by parental feeling of warmth, love, sense of possession, deviation, protectiveness, and concern. Bonding failure, its antedenents, and its consequences are poorly understood.
Mothers who fail to bond report feeling either indifference or hostility for their child, sometimes together with impulses to harm or neglected the child. Postnatal mental illness, particularly depression or psychosis, and recalled severe pain in labour are associated with bonding failure. It is needed to support of mother infant bonding during first two years of life the child.
