THE RELATIONSHIP OF MATERNAL HBSAG LEVELS WITH NEWBORN HBV DNA ON VERTICAL TRANSMISSION

Background : This study is a preliminary study aimed to assess the relation of maternal HBsAg levels with HBV DNA of newborn.
Material : This study used cross sectional method conducted in the department of paediatrics of Wahidin, Universitas Hasanuddin and Salewangang Maros hospital from August 2016 to January 2017 by involving 30 mothers who are chronic carriers of HBsAg. The samples of this research are 28 mothers gave birth to single born, 1 mother gave birth to Gemelli born, and 1 mother gave birth to triplet born. So there were 33 infants whose mothers were HBsAg positive included in this research. Serum specimens were obtained from the mothers and their babies after delivery. Subsequently, these specimens were analysed to determine the presence or the absence of vertical transmission. HBV DNA in the newborns prove the vertical transmission especially intrauterine transmission. Maternal HBsAg levels were measured by using ECLIA method, while the infants’ HBV DNA was examined by using Polyeramerase Chain Reaction Technique.
Results : The results of this research show that the median points of Maternal HBsAg on HBV DNA-positive group was 1307 IU / ml and the median of HBV DNA-negative group was 3875 IU / ml. The minimum - maximum points of maternal HBsAg on HBV DNA-positive-group was 48.95 – 45980, while the HBV DNA-negative group was 8.7 - 112700 IU/ml. Mann Whitney test results showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups with p = 0.346 (p 0.05).
Conclusions : Vertical transmission especially intrauterine transmission occurred about 15,2%. There is no relationship between maternal HBsAg levels and the HBV DNA in the newborn. Maternal HBsAg levels can not be used to assess the presence of vertical transmission
