Short Bowel Syndrome

Short bowel syndrome, or simply called short gut, is defined as maldigestive and malabsorptive condition most often due to extensive resection of small bowel or congenital anomalies. Since the length of small intestine is necessary for it to conduct normal absorption, patients with short bowel syndrome often suffer intestinal failure—the inability of intestine to maintain water and electrolyte balance, meet the energy and protein demand, and fulfill the micronutrients requirement for normal growth and development. However, it appears that most cases of short bowel syndrome in Surabaya emerges following abdominal stoma surgery—a procedure with considerable complications. From 4 different retrospective studies with 1.5-5 years follow-up, the case fatality rate of short bowel syndrome is up to 27.5-37.5%. We studied 2194 patients in pediatric ward of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, in which there are 59 patients underwent stoma procedure. We observed that 40.68% stomas are performed in the small bowel, mainly as ileostomy (33.90%) and duodenostomy (5.08%).Bacterial infection (64.4%) is the most common complication arises, followed by hypokalemia (18.6%) and hyponatremia (13.6%)—We followed 2194 patients in pediatric ward of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, in which there are 59 patients underwent abdominal stoma procedure. We observed that 40.68% stomas are performed in the small bowel, mainly as ileostomy (33.90%) and duodenostomy (5.08%).and about 6.8% from all 59 patients died due to complications of stoma procedure.
