THE CHILDHOOD SOLID TUMORS IN DHARMAIS CANCER HOSPITAL

Background : Characteristics of solid tumors in children differ from solid tumor in adult. The incidence of solid tumor approximately 30% of all pediatric cancers. The aim of our study was to describe the types of solid tumor in children in “Dharmais” Cancer Hospital.
Material : This study was a three-years retrospective study of the childhood solid tumor in “Dharmais” Cancer Hospital. The data was retrieved from Cancer Registry Division with diagnosis of solid tumors from 2011 to 2013, age 0-18 years. The main parameters used to collected were age, gender, type and location of the tumor, and basic of diagnostic
Results : The results showed 400 cases of solid tumors in childhood, 140 cases in 2011, 124 cases in 2012, and 136 cases in 2013. Most cases were in 0-4 years old (130 cases). The percentage of solid tumors by gender was 59% (male) and 41% (female). The most solid tumors in male were lymphoma (22%), malignant bone tumors (13%), soft tissues and other extra osseous sarcomas (12%), CNS and miscellaneous intracranial and intraspinal neoplasms (12%), and other malignant epithelial neoplasms and malignant melanomas (9%). The most solid tumors in female were malignant bone tumors (17%), Germ cell tumors, trophoblastic tumors, and neoplasms of gonads (14%), other malignant epithelial neoplasms and malignant melanomas (14%), soft tissues and other extra osseous sarcomas (11%), and lymphoma (11%). Approximately 85% cases were microscopically verified
Conclusions : Lymphoma is the most common childhood solid tumor in male, whereas malignant bone tumor more common in female. This study provides useful information on the diagnosis of solid tumors in children and highlights cancer incidence in different age and sex groups at “Dharmais” Cancer Hospital
