THE CORRELATION OF PLATELET COUNTS WITH REMISSION STATUS IN CHILDHOOD ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA AT DR SARDJITO GENERAL HOSPITAL

Background : Numerous studies showed the association between leukemic cells during treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and therapeutic outcome. In contrast, little is known about the impact of platelet counts in this setting. This study was conducted to investigate the correlation of platelet counts before, on day 8, and at the end of induction treatment (day 42) with remission status in children with ALL treated with Indonesian ALL-2013 Protocol. Material : This is a retrospective study. Available platelet counts before, on day 8, and at the end of induction treatment and remission status were obtained from medical records of 175 children with ALL treated with the Indonesian ALL-2013 Protocol at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital. The platelet count of less than 150,000/microliter was categorized as thrombocytopenia. Blast less than 5% on bone marrow aspiration after completing the induction treatment was considered as remission. The correlation of platelet counts at different time-points and the remission status were analyzed using Chi Square test and Contingency Coefficient test. Results : Of the 175 children with ALL treated from January 2013 to April 2016 at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, 153 were eligible for further analysis. One hundred and fifty of patients had data of platelet count before the treatment, while 103 and 143 patients had data of platelet count during and after induction phase, respectively. The platelet count on day 8 was significantly correlated with the remission status of the patient (p=0.031) with Contingency Coefficient of 0.207 which showed a weak correlation. Conclusions : There is a significant yet weak correlation between the platelet count on day 8 with remission status after induction treatment. Further study on the impact of platelet counts on remission status in childhood ALL is required.
