ASSOCIATION OF ABSOLUTE LYMPHOCYTE COUNT WITH REMISSION STATUS IN CHILDREN WITH ACUTE LYPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA AT DR SARDJITO GENERAL HOSPITAL

Background : Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common hematological malignancy in children. Previous studies showed that absolute lymphocyte counts (ALC) during treatment was associated with the outcome in children with ALL. This study was conducted to find out the association between ALC before, during, and after induction treatment with remission status in children with ALL using Indonesia ALL 2013 protocol in Dr. Sardjito General Hospital.
Material : From January 2013 to April 2016, 175 patients under 18 years of age were diagnosed with ALL and treated with the Indonesia ALL 2013 protocol at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital. Data were collected from medical records and analyzed according to sex, age, risk stratification, ALC, and remission status. The ALC data were grouped based on laboratory standard. The association of ALC at different points of time and the remission status were analyzed using chi-square test and contingency coefficient.
Results : Of the 175 children with ALL treated from 2013 to April 2016 at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, 153 were eligible for further analysis. 127 patients had data of ALC before treatment, 100 patients had data during treatment, and 137 patients had data after treatment. The ALC during (day 8) and at the end of induction phase (day 42) do not have significant association with the remission status (p>0.05). Meanwhile, ALC before treatment has a significant association with the remission status (p<0,05) and contingency coefficient (r = 0.23).
Conclusions : There is a significant association between ALC before treatment with the remission status. Further evaluation of this study is required.
