Factors associated with Anaemia amongst under-five children hospitalized at Ende General Hospital Flores, East Nusa Tenggara

Background : Anaemia is a major public health problem in developing countries. About 43 % of under-fives are anemic worldwide, and two-thirds reside in sub-Saharan Africa. Iron deficiency is the most prevalent and widespread nutrition-related health problem among infants/children because their rapid growth increase iron needs This study aimed to determine factors associated with anemia in under-five children admitted at Ende general Hospital, Flores East Nusa Tenggara
Material : This was a hospital-based, cross-sectional study conducted between March and May 2018. Selected laboratory investigations were done on children admitted to Ende General hospital. Anaemia was defined using WHO criteria which age under 5 years and above six month. Chi- square t and logistic regression test was used to assess the effect of sex, nutritional status, age and caretaker to anaemia.
Results : A total of 110 children recruited into the study. The prevalence of anemia was 40% (44/110) with 35 hypocromic microcytic and 14 normocromic normocytic anemia. The caracteristic of patients were sex: 60% (66/110) male, 40% (44/110) female, caretaker: housewife 73% (80/110), civil servants 10% (11/110), private employment 6% (7/110) and peasant 11% (12/110). Asessmen for nutritional status were 26% (29/110) well nourished, 34% (36/110) mild malnourished, 11%( 12/110) moderate malnourished, 29% (32/110) severe malnourished. There are 63% (69/110) < 2 years and 37% (41/110) > 2 years age. Factors asociated with anaemia were mild malnourished [ OR; 95% CI= 5,3; (1,54-18,5); p-value=0,08], severe malnourished [3,93; (1,1-13,8);0,03], age < 2 years [3,6; (1,3-9,9);0,01] and peasant caretaker [5,1;(1,1-2,20);0,04].
Conclusions : factors associated with anaemia were peasant among caretaker, mild and severe nutritional status and age under two years
