Background : Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of malignancy found in childhood and the major treatment is chemotherapy. Both cancer cells and chemotherapy produce free radicals that result in oxidative stress, characterized by increase levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). The aim of this study was to analyze the MDA levels before and after induction phase of chemotherapy in ALL. Material : A prospective cohort study was performed to ALL patients treated in The Department of Child Health in Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital Makassar from October 2016 to October 2017. The MDA levels were evaluated before and after induction phase of chemotherapy by Wilcoxon Test. Results : 60 patients were evaluated in the period. The MDA levels decreased after induction phase compared to that before chemotherapy (p = 0,206) in standard risk group. Meanwhile, the MDA levels had increased after induction phase compared to that before chemotherapy (p = 0,030) in high risk group. There was no significant difference in MDA levels before induction phase (p = 0,880), but there was significant difference in MDA levels after induction phase (p = 0,005) of chemotherapy between groups. Conclusions : MDA levels decreased after induction phase of chemotherapy in ALL standard risk, but increased after induction phase of chemotherapy in ALL high risk. No significant difference in MDA levels before induction phase however significant difference in MDA levels after induction phase of chemotherapy between standard risk and high risk.
