CORRELATION BETWEEN SEASONAL PATTERNS AND INCIDENCE OF CHILDHOOD IMMUNE THROMBOCYTOPENIA PURPURA IN DR SARDJITO GENERAL HOSPITAL

Background : Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is one of the most common causes of thrombocytopenia in children. Previous studies stated that there were more incidence of ITP in the end of winter and in the begining of spring similar to viral disease pattern.Indonesia has two seasons, rainy and dry seasons. This study was conducted to determine the correlation between seasonal patterns and the incidence of childhood ITP.
Material : This was a retrospective study, which involved children with ITP. Data were collected from Medical Record of Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, since January 1st, 2013 until December 31st, 2017. Seasonal periods were obtained from Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia. We analyzed the data with Chi-square analysis.
Results : There were 164 childhood ITP cases. Five cases were excluded because the subject were originated from outside Yogyakarta and surrounding areas, which have different seasonal pattern. There was no correlation between incidence of childhood ITP and seasonal patterns during rainy, dry and transitional season (p=0.17). Our study showed the increasing incidence of childhood ITP in April and October , most probably because of increasing rate of viral infection. infection.
Conclusions : There is no correlation between seasonal patterns and childhood ITP however, the result of this study should be confirmed with larger scale studies to find any correlation with viral infection
