Prevalence of anemia among hospitalized children at the RSUD Sayang Rakyat, Makassar

Background : Childhood anemia was commonly found in Indonesia but there was inadequate information known to our hospital. This study described the prevalence of anemia and its associated morbidity to improve the quality of child service.
Material : We conducted a retrospective study from October 2017 to January 2018. Every child admitted to our hospital were included. Those who had no blood examination were excluded.
Results : We enrolled 84 children, in which 59.5% were males and 70.2% aged six years or less. Malnutrition were found in 65.5% of them (23 children were severely wasted, 30 children were wasted, and two were obese). Forty one children (48.8%) had anemia. The greatest proportion of anemia were found in those aged 2-6 years (65.7%). Anemia was frequently encountered in children with febrile seizure, viral exanthema, and respiratory tract infection (62.5%, 58.3%, and 57.5% respectively).
Conclusions : Approximately half of the admitted children had anemia and malnutrition. As a district hospital, we should encourage infection control, education on balanced nutrition to the family, and provision of micronutrient supplementation.
