MORTALITY PROFILE IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH CANCER IN HASAN SADIKIN GENERAL HOSPITAL, BANDUNG

Background : Cancer is still one of the main cause of death in children around the world, with morbidity and mortality rate due to cancer increase every year. In countries with limited health facilities, cancer death rate in children reach 90%. In more than 50% of cases, pediatric patients with cancer who come to health facilities are already in advance states. The aim of the study was to describe the most common cause of death in pediatric patients with cancer in Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung
Material : This is a descriptive retrospective study conducting by collecting data from mortality case reports audited by experts from Hasan Sadikin General Hospital. Subjects in this study are children aged 1 to 18 years who had been diagnosed with cancer and died within the period of January 2015 - December 2017 in Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung
Results : During the period of January 2015 - December 2017 we got 109 (13.4%) death cases from total 890 cases of cancer in children, 46.8% was diagnose as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 12.8% NHML, 7.3% retinoblastoma and 33.1% the other cancer . From total 109 death cases, 58.7% were boys and 41.3% were girls. Most of the death cases (36.7%) occurred in the age group of 5-9 years old. Severe malnutrition was found in 45% of cases. Sepsis was the main cause of death in pediatric patients with cancer (65.1%), followed by leukostasis (17.4%), and intracranial haemorrhage (7.3%). >From total 71 death cases due to sepsis, 32.4% caused by hospital acquired pneumonia
Conclusions : Cancer mortality rate in children is still quite high, with infection as the leading cause of death. Optimal efforts should be made to prevent the occurrence of infection in pediatric cancer patients
