Background : Childhood brain tumors are the most common pediatric solid tumor with high morbidity and poor outcome. The study about childhood brain tumor characteristics is varying. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiology of childhood brain tumors.
Material : A retrospective study using medical records of 1-18 years old children with childhood brain tumors in Dr. Soetomo Hospital from January 2015 to December 2017 were reviewed. The time of presentation data included age, sex, histological diagnosis, tumor location, therapy, and outcome were collected. Data were described in terms of frequencies. The comparation of outcome based on histological type were analized with ANOVA (P<0.05 was considered significant).
Results : A total of 24 children were participated. The mean age was 10.6 (SD 4.27) years with the youngest was 2.7 years old. Boys (16/24) has the highest incidence. The most common histological type was medulloblastoma tumor (7/24), then astrocytoma (3/24) and ependymoma (3/24). The most tumors were located in infratentorial (15/24). The symptoms most were headache (21/24), vomiting (17/24), seizure (15/24), and decrease of consciousness (11/24). Excisional surgery as the main treatment were done in 23/24 continued with radiotherapy 11/24 and chemotherapy 2/24. Hydrocephalus presented in 17/24 patients from Head MRI and 14/17 revealed non communicating hydrocephalus. Survival rate of this disease was 16/24. High mortality was noted in medulloblastoma (5/7). There was significant outcome difference based on histological type (95% confidence interval, P = 0.002).
Conclusions : The characteristics of childhood brain tumor are boys, headache symptom, and exicional surgery treatment. Medulloblastoma is the most common of childhood brain tumor with poor outcome.
