Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha And Interleukin-10 Profile Of Children With Sepsis, Balance Or Imbalance

Background : The imbalance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses has been shown in inflammatory process of sepsis. Pro-inflammatory cytokine, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-?) lead to activation innate or the adaptive immune response, characterized by further production of immunoregulatory or effector cytokines. Profound proinflammatory response is counteracted by anti-inflammatory cytokine, including Interleukin-10 (IL-10). The aim of this study was to analyze the profile of TNF-? and IL-10 in children with sepsis.
Material : An observational study was performed between April 2016 to June 2017 at Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in four hospital (Ciptomangunkusumo, Adam Malik, USU and Haji). The eligible subject were 80 children with sepsis. Diagnosis based on the Goldstein criteria. Blood samples had taken immediately when the patient admitted in the PICU ward. The serum level of TNF-? and IL-10 cytokine was measured with ELISA.
Results : Of 80 children with sepsis, the median level of TNF-? was 9,95 pg/ml (3,0 pg/ml - 52,1 pg/ml) and IL-10 was 11,7 pg/ml (1,4 pg/ml – 80,1 pg/ml),respectively.
Conclusions : There were imbalanced between the median level of TNF-? and IL-10 in children with sepsis.
