Background : Diphtheria is one of the serious infectious diseases in children. Diagnosis is established by clinical findings, leukocytosis and confirmed by culture. The severity of the disease is established by how wide the pseudomembrane is.
Material : By finding the mean leukocyte count for both moderate diphtheria and heavy diphtheria. The percentage of leukocyte count for moderate diphtheria (<10000, 10000-15000, 15000-20000, >20000) is also calculated.
Results : The mean of leukocyte count for moderate diphtheria with 32 cases (13983) is higher than the mean leukocyte count for severe diphtheria with 6 cases (12112). The percentage of leukocyte count under 10000 is 18.75%, between 10000 and 15000 is 43.75%, between 15000 and 20000 is 28.13% and above 20000 is 9.38%.
Conclusions : This preliminary study concluded that both moderate and severe diphtheria does not always show the presence of leukocytosis as the highest percentage of leukocyte count is for leukocyte count between 10000 and 15000 (43.75%). Further study with larger sample size is required.
