STAPHYLOCOCCAL SCALDED SKIN SYNDROME IN A NEONATE AT KALABAHI HOSPITAL, ALOR, EAST NUSA TENGGARA

Background : Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a syndrome caused by exotoxin and is released by Staphylococcus aureus. SSSS predominantly affects neonates, children less than 5 years of age, and adults with immunocompromaised conditions. Clinical features include macula erithema then be blistering and or diffuse expholiative. The mucose membrane is seldom involved.
Case Presentation Summary : A 12-days-old girl with skin lession whole over the body, fever, and dehidration hospitalized at Kalabahi Hospital, Alor, East Nusa Tenggara. On physical examination, it was found skin blistering, mucous membranes were not affected, Nikolsky’s sign was positive. Skin biopsy cannot be performed because of limited facility at the hospital. The treatments were antibiotic (oral clindamycin), acetaminophen for pain and fever, rehidration, supportive care with saline-moistened dressing and topical antibiotic with placenta extract 10%,neomycin sulfate 0.5%.
Learning Points/Discussion : SSSS is an infectious diseases. Bacteria transmission can be prevented by maintaining personal hygiene such as hand washing before and after touching the patient. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent the mortality associated with these complications.
